The first question

Can this floor be saved?

Most of the time, yes. A floor that looks finished is usually just a worn top coat, a little cupping, and a handful of bad boards. Before anyone starts talking about tear-out, David reads the floor: how much wear layer is left, where the moisture came from, whether the damage is on the surface or underneath it.

Sometimes the honest answer is that it has to come out. More often it is a sand, a repair and a finish, for a fraction of what a new floor costs, on wood you cannot buy anymore.

We were ready to rip out the floor and replace it with laminate, but decided to first contact David to see if there was any way he could restore it. He said the floor could absolutely be restored. The results were amazing.

Refinishing & restoration

Sand back to bare wood, fix what needs fixing, then stain and finish. Oak that has gone gray and flat comes back with grain you had forgotten was in there. Traffic lanes, pet damage, water stains and decades of wax all come off in the sand.

New hardwood installation

Solid or engineered, laid over a subfloor that was flattened and checked for moisture first. Site-finished when you want the color to be yours instead of whatever came out of the box.

Repairs & board replacement

One damaged section does not mean a new floor. Bad boards get cut out and laced in so the repair disappears into the field. This is the call after a dishwasher leak, after a wall comes down, or when carpet comes out of a bedroom and the hardwood needs to run through.

David Harris

Harris Hardwood Floors is David's company and David's trade. He has been in hardwood for more than twenty years, works out of Longmont, and covers Boulder and Weld County and the towns in between. He has also written for Wood Floor Business, the trade's own magazine, which tells you roughly how seriously he takes it.
